The University of Texas Medical Branch’s Physician Assistant Program
is a two-year master’s level degree curriculum that recognizes the
emerging status of the PA. The clinical year consist of 48 weeks of
clinical education divided into four blocks consisting of four-week
rotations. With around 90 students per class, we welcome experienced
clinicians to teach our students.

Preceptor of the Year Award
The Preceptor Excellence Award is selected annually by clinical year students to recognize and honor a preceptor who demonstrates a commitment to excellence in the clinical education and training of UTMB physician assistant students.
The students chose Peter L. Gergen as the recipient of the 2024 Preceptor Excellence Award. The award was presented to Mr. Gergen at commencement exercises on August 17, 2024. Mr. Gergen is a physician assistant and UTMB preceptor at Angelina County Health District in Lufkin, Texas. He graduated from the University of Houston with a bachelor of science degree in biology in 1984 then attended and received his PA degree from the UTMB Physician Assistant Program in 1989. Mr. Gergen has spent the last 34 years providing primary health care in rural areas of East Texas and is a longtime clinical preceptor for the program.
