Mission Statement

  • The Office of Educational Development supports the School of Medicine's educational mission by:
  • designing and providing faculty development to improve teaching and learning;
  • curriculum development aimed at effective teaching and learning;
  • provides expertise to support effective learner assessment;
  • designs and provides curriculum and educational program evaluations to promote continually-improving teaching and learning;
  • conducts and collaborates on educational research grounded in sound theory and current practice;
  • collaborates with faculty colleagues to advance the scholarship of education.

    Era Buck, PhD
    Senior Medical Educator
    Assistant Professor of Family Medicine

    Dr. Buck holds a doctorate in social psychology from the University of Houston. Her career in medical education includes experience in undergraduate and graduate medical education. She has developed and provided training for medical students, residents, fellows and faculty. Her work focuses on program evaluation, educational research and primary health care delivery and outcomes. She has published and presented at national and international meetings. She conducts workshops and consults with individuals and committees with regard to medical education issues.

  • Oma Morey, PhD
    Senior Medical Educator

    Assistant Professor of Department of Internal Medicine, Sealy Center on Aging
    Dr. Morey received a PhD in Adult Education and Gerontology from the University of Texas at Austin in 2002 and a Ph.D. from the Centre for Qualitative Research in School of Health and Social Care at Bournemouth University, Bournemouth, England. She currently holds an appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine and Senior Medical Educator in the Office of Educational Development (OED). She is also a Special Member of the Graduate Faculty in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, an Associate Member of the Institute for the Medical Humanities and a Fellow in the Sealy Center on Aging.

    Dr. Morey has been involved with education in the public, private, and non-profit sectors for over 20 years with a major focus on teaching and presentation skills. She has presented and conducted workshops at national and international conferences and has published in the adult education literature. Her research interests include the use of research-based theatre in medical education, teaching empathy in medical education, transformational learning, reflective learning, caregiving issues surrounding learning and spirituality, and physician communication with the elderly and their caregivers. She provides consultation coaching with faculty to develop their teaching and presentation skills.

  • Anne Rudnicki, EdD
    Senior Medical Educator
    Assistant Professor of Department of Pediatrics

    Dr. Rudnicki received her EdD in Curriculum and Instruction in the program area of Instructional Technology from the University of Houston. Dr. Rudnicki provides faculty consultation, workshops, training, and support for instructional design, educational uses of multimedia, case-based teaching and learning, and digital storytelling. Dr. Rudnicki's research interests are educational uses of digital storytelling, narrative medicine, and sociocultural approaches to learning. Dr. Rudnicki is also interested in narrative inquiry and mixed methods research methodologies.

  • Ni Zhang, MS

    Ni Zhang received her MS in Management Information Systems from the University of North Texas. Her present position is Biostatistician. Her major responsibilities include providing statistical analyses and data summaries for curriculum evaluation and research projects and managing data collection for the Office of Educational Development's longitudinal research project. She also provides backup support for the Standardized Patient Program.

  • Karen Szauter, MD
    Medical Director, Standardized Patient Program
    Professor of Department of Internal Medicine

    Dr. Szauter received her MD degree from Case Western Reserve University, completed a residency in Internal Medicine, and fellowships in Gastroenterology and Nutrition. She is Senior Medical Educator in the Office of Educational Development and Medical Director of the Standardized Patient (SP) Center. She is also Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine/Gastroenterology and Co-director of the Internal Medicine year-3 Clerkship.

    Dr. Szauter works with the SP staff to insure that medical aspects of the SP cases and portrayals are accurate. She also coordinates projects and research in the SP Center. Her areas of interest in addition to standardized patients include the teaching and evaluation of clinical skills, professionalism and professional development.

  • A Brief History of the Office of Educational Development

    UTMB’s Office of Educational Development was founded on February 15, 1971. Initially designated the Office of Research in Medical Education, it was given its current name in 1981 to reflect its broader functions within the School of Medicine.
