Ambulatory Community Selective (ACS) Course Helpful Hints

Information about the required 4th year ACS course can be found on the ACS brochure website (syllabi, course description, required assignments, etc.). You should look at the ACS brochure page first. This page of helpful hints is just a supplement to the ACS online brochure. If considering a student-created ACS option, please do not talk to potential preceptors until you have read the rules on the Student-Created Site webpage.

  1. Pain Management ACS
    • ANEU 4009
    • 4 days each week in League City (Mon., Tues., Wed. and Fri.), 1 day in Galveston (Wednesdays)
    • Only 2 students may register for this course each Period
    • There is no student-created option
  2. Dermatology ACS
    • DERU 4005 - AHEC finds your preceptor (2 Students per Period may register)
    • DERU 4049 - Student finds their own preceptor (4 students per Period may register)
    • These are the same course...the only difference is who finds your preceptor
  3. Family Medicine ACS
    • FAMU 4013 (7 students per Period may register)
    • Only available during Periods 2-8

  4. Public Health ACS
    • FAMU 4020
    • You must register prior to the 60 day deadline for this course. No late C Form registrations allowed.
    • Only 1 student may register for this course each Period
  5. Public Health ACS
    • FAMU 4059
    • This course is not available during Period 12.
    • Conducted only in Austin at the CD Doyle clinic and other locations
    • Only 1 students may register for this course each Period
    • You will also work on the weekends during this course
  6. Public Health ACS
    • FAMU 4045
    • This course is not available during Periods 1, 12 or 13.
    • Conducted at St. Vincent's Clinic and other locations local to Galveston
    • Only 3 students may register for this course each Period
    • You will work on Saturdays during this course
  7. Frontera de Salud ACS
    • FAMU 4022
    • Only conducted in Brownsville
    • Only 1 student allowed to register per Period
    • Credit towards the Bilingual Health Track
    • Must talk to Dr. Perez (BHT Director) 8 weeks prior to enrolling regarding topic and logistics
    • Student must supply their own housing in Brownsville. Otherwise, student can pay $500 for housing in Brownsville upon request and availability with 8 weeks notice prior to enrolling.
  8. Complementary and Integrative Medicine ACS
    • FAMU 4053
    • Only 1 doctor in Austin and 1 doctor in Houston have been ok'd to teach this course.
    • The 2 available doctors are not available every Period. We may ask you to change ACS courses if they are not available during the Period for which you are registered.
  9. Internal Medicine ACS
    • MEDU 4059 - AHEC finds your preceptor
    • MEDU 4049 - Student finds their own preceptor
    • These are the same course...the only difference is who finds your preceptor
  10. Neurology ACS
    • NEUU 4004
    • Only 2 students may register per Period for this course.
  11. OBGYN ACS
    • OBGU 4019 - AHEC finds your preceptor (2 students maximum per period)
    • OBGU 4049 - Student finds their own preceptor (1 student per period maximum)
    • These are the same course...the only difference is who finds your preceptor
  12. Ophthalmology ACS
    • OPHU 4004 - 3 students per Period maximum
  13. Orthopedic Surgery ACS
    • ORSU 4016 - only 1 student per Period and only conducted in League City
    • ORSU 4049 - 4 students per Period. Credentialing paperwork probably needed.
  14. Otolaryngology ACS
    • OTOU 4006 - AHEC finds your preceptor. 3 students per Period maximum.
    • OTOU 4049 - Student finds their preceptor. 2 students per Period maximum.
    • These are the same course...the only difference is who finds your preceptor
  15. Pathology ACS
    • PATU 4023
    • Only conducted in Texas City at the Galveston County Coroner's Office
    • Only 1 student may enroll per Period
    • There is no student-created option for this course
  16. Pediatrics ACS
    • PEDU 4045 - AHEC finds your preceptor (3 students maximum per Period)
    • PEDU 4095 - Student finds their own preceptor (2 students maximum per Period)
    • The PEDI ACS course is NOT available in Austin
    • The PEDI ACS course is very hard to place in locations commutable to Galveston
  17. Psychiatry ACS
    • PSYU 4049 - Student finds their own preceptor
    • PSYU 4050 - AHEC finds your preceptor (only 2 students per Period)
    • These are the same course...the only difference is who finds your preceptor
  18. Radiation Oncology ACS
    • RADU 4015 - Only conducted in Galveston
    • RADU 4018 - Only conducted in Houston at St. Joseph's Hospital
    • Maximum of 2 students per Period in each course.
    • You MUST have active TDCJ clearance to take this course.
    • There is no student-created option for this course
  19. Surgery ACS
    • SURU 4030 - AHEC finds your preceptor. Only 4 students per Period maximum
    • SURU 4049 - Student finds their own preceptor.
    • Though you may experience surgery during this course, the main concentration is on the ambulatory portion of a Surgeon's practice.
    • There may be lots of paperwork to get you credentialed for this course.
